Landscapes Ride — Water Ride — Wineries Ride (1-4 days, 200km)

Hawke’s Bay Trails was born out of the vision to create a seaside pathway for Napier. Over 10 years later, it boasts 200km of cycle trails.

Meandering around and between the twin cities of Napier and Hastings, Hawke’s Bay Trails is mostly flat, a river and coastal network of pathways stretching over the Heretaunga Plains.

There are three distinct cycling experiences: the Landscapes Ride, the Water Ride and the Wineries Ride.

The Landscapes Ride explores the picturesque coastal communities of Haumoana, Te Awanga and Clifton, which border the coastline of the iconic Cape Kidnappers. The Cape is home to the world’s largest mainland gannet colony and one of the world’s top 50 golf courses. Riders will also enjoy views of the impressive Te Mata Peak and the expansive ocean.

The Water Ride is flat, easy and perfect for families. It provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and includes the Ahuriri Estuary, a sanctuary for endangered wetland wildlife.

The Wineries Ride is a relaxed ride that covers the wine-growing areas of Bridge Pa, Gimblett Gravels and the Ngatarawa Triangle. The trail is dotted with numerous award-winning wineries that afford plenty of places to stop and rest along the way.

Be Prepared

The Hawke’s Bay Trails are predominantly flat grade 1-3 (easiest to intermediate) cycle trails.

Novice or beginner riders will enjoy riding most of Hawke’s Bay Trails. Some fitness and road riding experience is recommended for the Tukituki & Waimarama Road sections of the Landscapes Ride. There are bridges across all rivers and tributaries where required.

There are toilets and facilities available at all cafes and wineries and public toilets are also located along the trail.

Trails users should check the weather before they ride and dress accordingly.

Bike wise, pretty much anything with two wheels will work, although a road racing cyclist might find the limesand a little jarring on the bones and bum! We recommend cruisers, ‘Pathway’ bikes, shopping bikes or entry level mountain bikes, i.e. those bikes with slightly wider tyres for comfort and a more relaxing riding position for cruising from stop to stop.

MOBILE PHONE COVERAGE: Available on all the trails.

DRINKING WATER: It is recommended that riders carry drinking water, although there are numberous places for supplies along the way.

Weather Info

Hawke’s Bay Trails are open year round. Favourite times of the year are the flush of spring blossom, autumn colours and during the scorching Hawke’s Bay summers when numerous big events are hosted, including Art Deco Weekend, the Mission Concert and Horse of the Year.
